Pres. Obama on Making Mistakes

Posted by madjillmom on May 21, 2009

In his speech today, Pres. Obama said “But if we continue to make decisions within a climate of fear, we will make more mistakes.”  I agree.  Was he talking about Tarp 1, the Stimulus Bill, or the coming to soon Healthcare reform?

Obama Flubs Sec. of Defense Name

Posted by madjillmom on May 21, 2009

Now we know why Pres. Obama is having a hard time putting a coherent securiy plicy together. He keeps calling Bill Gates and asking him what the General’s think.  Gosh, I am sleeping better tonight.  How can you mess this up when you are reading from a teleprompter?

Prisoners of Oversea’s Contingency Operations

Posted by madjillmom on May 21, 2009

Pres. Obama’s speech shows once again how sensitive/thin skinned he is when it comes to criticism and how much he likes to blame Bush.  The first 10 minutes was all about how this isn’t his fault, it is Bush’s fault because they aren’t as smart as he and his administration are.  I will concede that the detainee situation was ad-hoc, formed over time with problems, judicial and logistical and maybe ethical.  It was patched together after legal opinions and judges expanded the Geneva Convention rights and citizen’s rights were conferred upon the alleged terrorists or prisoners of war.  That is the problem.  Here is how Obama is smarter than anyone:

1.  He will be able to devine who can be released because he can tell who will or won’t return to the battlefield.  He told us that Bush did this, but he is smarter and won’t let any bad guys go.

1. He will try some in American courts.  OK.  There may be some who can be tried in American courts, but only those caught on our soil and investigated by the authorities.  You cannot try someone who was picked up in Afghanistan doing something wrong because there won’t be any evidence, no yellow tape, no CSI, no evidence for the most part.  These are the people who are Prisoners of War.

3.  He will be smarter and kinder about Military Tribunals.  Yeah, he has tinkered around the edges.  Let’s see how well that works.

4.  He will put detainees in maximum security prisons.   He will do this without tribunals or hearings, and the Supreme Court will not allow this to happen.  People in prison have been found guilty.  It is against the law to have a prison where people are kept without due process.  Remember the Japanese detainment camps that Roosevelt had during WWII?  Ok, do it and we will call them Prisoner of Oversea’s Contingency Operations.

Shopping for a Car on Craigslist Again

Posted by madjillmom on May 20, 2009

Yesterday, at the urging of one of my sons, we spent 6 hours of quality time driving to Austin to see 4 cars we were considering buying.  In an earlier post, I wrote of my disappointment with some of the ways Craigslist works.  I have already been the victim of fraud attempts that I didn’t fall for, but could see how someone might.

Armed with the printouts of the cars we were interested in, having made phone calls to each of the people/lots selling the cars, off we went.  The first place we went was in a barrio section of town.  We were greeted with a different car than what we wanted to see and my son wouldn’t walk to the corner of the clutterd car yard to see the one advertised.  A curious man flung chicken bones at a dog and almost growled at my son.  These people put the extensive ad on Craigslist, yet seemed surprise when we showed up.  Even if the car was right, I don’t know how we could have test driven it as there was an unworking portion of a car in front of it, so we didn’t.

Next we met a man in a nearby parking lot.  The ad said “some hail damage”.  It looked like it had been in a war.  He drove with the windows down, so I don’t think the A/C worked even the they said it did.  On to the next one.  This one was in a better part of town, or at least across the street from a better part of town.  This one looked good, but didn’t drive well.  Then to the next one, another yard littered with cars working and not, but not the car we drove 90 miles to see.

All in all, it was a terrible bust.  If it isn’t sexual services on Craigslist, I think I would think twice about anything on it.  I do know some people who sold their car on Craigslist.  They must have been the only honest car sellers on there.

I am a Failure as a Mother

Posted by madjillmom on May 20, 2009

I have decided at this moment that I am a failure as a mother.  Or I am bucking some genetic thing that just can’t be civilized. I just spent some time trying to find Dave Barry’s column on “Male Genetic Dirt Blindness”.  It was a fabulously funny column about the difference between men and women in recognizing the dirt that exists around us and then cleaning up the dirt.  MGDB does seem to exist.  At least in my home.

Please note that I have 3 sons (two 19 tomorrow, one 21), a husband, two dogs, and a cat.  I have had a broken ankle for almost 5 weeks now and am getting around ok, but sore doing it.  The house has suffered during my stint with broken bone.  My husband is 95% better than most others, but he can’t work 40 hours a week, cook, and clean.  So today is the day I am trying to get help with cleaning the house.  One of my son’s girlfriends is bringing a friend to visit for a few days, so this is the excuse.  I would like to make a good impression and the level of the house filth has exceeded my tolerance level.  This creates a bit of fireworks around here.  I ask or scream at someone to do something, they say they will, then they might do do it about as half-assed as can be done.  They really do not see the need.  If the boy that is having the visitors sees the need, his twin doesn’t.  This is all a great frustration for me.  I do wish to make a good impression on the visitors, but the house just needs a decent once over.  This coupled with the realization that the house isn’t a lot cleaner when they are not home all makes for a lot of aggravation on my part.

I learned during the worst part of the broken ankle that I am in charge of wiping the counters.  I am the only person that does this.  I do not know why that is.

I wonder if I will visit my children when they have homes of their own one day and find them a total mess.  I was raised in a home where the parents weren’t real good on cleaning.  My mother didn’t seem to know how.  My sister and I cleaned if it was to be cleaned.  It seems to be about the same here now.  If I have sons that are incapable of cleaning a house, I have been a failure.

I had a friend once whose husband went after her as she cleaned, doing it more and better.  He was a bit OCD I guess.  That is the only male I have ever known of that would do that.  She said it was an annoyance.  I guess she was right, but I would have hired him if I could.

Pres. Obama Wants Civility

Posted by madjillmom on May 17, 2009

I watched about 5 minutes of Pres. Obama’s commencement speech at Notre Dame.  He called upon everyone to not demonize people who hold opposite views on things like abortion.  Here are his words:

How does each of us remain firm in our principles, and fight for what we consider right, without, as Father John said, demonizing those with just as strongly held convictions on the other side?

This is once again a great deal of chutzpah from the man who laughed as Wanda Sykes demonized Rush Limbaugh, calling him a traitor and wishing he had kidney failure.  Yeah, that sets a good example.  His story also featured his campaign staff as violators of such wisdom.  It wasn’t him that demonized the other side on abortion as right wing nuts, it was someone on his staff.  This seems to happen to Obama often.  Rogue staffers did the wrong thing.

I am looking forward to attending my son’s graduation next year.  I am conflicted because there is a pretty good chance that Obama will speak at his graduation.  He is the president and that is an honor, but I am still very conflicted about it.  Perhaps I can be lectured on civility about this time next year by the King of Civility himself.

Pres. Obama’s Finances

Posted by madjillmom on May 16, 2009

A professor has analyzed  Barack and Michelle’s financial situation before they hit it big with a senate seat, two biographies, and Michelle’ tripled salary after Barack became a Senator.  It seems that they lived off a line of credit tied to their condo.  Initially they borrowed about $150,000 for the condo.  Before they went up in the world to the mini-mansion they now own, they managed to take cash out of their mortgage to the tune of another 80 or 90 thousand.  At the end, they owed about $240,00 on that same condo.  If that isn’t living on credit, I do not know what is.  And he lectures us about fiscal responsibility.

Our mortage balance after a 1/3 down payment has only gone lower. We overpay it each month.  Pay all our credit card balances, not minimums each month.  Do we overspend?  Yeah.  We pay our taxes.  Why does Pres. Obama lecture us on finances?

Tinker Around the Edges – Military Tribunals Now OK

Posted by madjillmom on May 15, 2009

This is getting to be standard operating procedure for Pres. Obama:

  1. Make a big deal out of what you think Pres. Bush was doing wrong and say you will do something way better, more in line with our principles
  2. Get Elected because the left loves all those promises
  3. As President, make quick announcements like closing Guantanamo and stopping Military Tribunals for alleged terrorists
  4. Then start studying the matter and find out just how difficult it is to do keep us protected from the bad guys
  5. Tinker around the edges of the Bush programs, change a few words here, add a clause or two, throw in a semicolon or two
  6. Pronounce that now the Bush era program is perfected because Obama has laid hands on it and said programs conform to our mighty principles and will show our adversaries just how great we he really is
  7. Repeat as necessary

Now we are all loved and principled at the very same time.

Obama Knows What He is Doing

Posted by madjillmom on May 15, 2009

I get a bit disheartened when I see stuff like this from Bloomberg.  It isn’t that he does these things because he doesn’t know the consequences, he does them because he has an agenda and killing the economy isn’t an issue for him.  Do what he says, not what he does.  This is what he told people in New Mexico yesterday.

May 14 (Bloomberg) — President Barack Obama, calling current deficit spending “unsustainable,” warned of skyrocketing interest rates for consumers if the U.S. continues to finance government by borrowing from other countries.

“We can’t keep on just borrowing from China,” Obama said at a town-hall meeting in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, outside Albuquerque. “We have to pay interest on that debt, and that means we are mortgaging our children’s future with more and more debt.”

Holders of U.S. debt will eventually “get tired” of buying it, causing interest rates on everything from auto loans to home mortgages to increase, Obama said. “It will have a dampening effect on our economy.”

At least once a week, he lectures us on fiscal responsibility, then he signs a bill spending too much money for something that won’t work.   He wants us to save our money and not live beyond our means because he will need to raise taxes to the sky to pay for his agenda.  He thinks his agenda is more important than the economy and is willing to dampen the economy to get what he wants.  I keep hoping the economy will get in the way of his agenda.  In this same appearance, he told us we can’t live off our credit cards anymore.  We pay our bills.  All of them.  Don’t lecture me on my spending habits.

Posted by madjillmom on May 15, 2009

This post from Internet Scofflaw may explain why the General in charge of Afghanistan was canned earlier in the week. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…
