Plea to Michael Steele – Better Press for Republican Input to Obama

Posted by madjillmom on February 23, 2009

Dear Mr. Steele:

When the Republicans meet with the President, or when they brainstorm at a Financial Responsibility Summit, let’s do a better job of getting out the Republican ideas.  Perhaps something as simple as a list of ideas from the Republicans requesting input for reform of social security, healthcare, tax reform, stimulus, etc.  If they consult with us, then say we have no ideas, rebut them with actual input from those who gave it.  So if the Dems say they had no ideas for Social Security Reform, we can say we proposed 15 concrete ideas on this date, who proposed them, and who in the majority they spoke to about including these ideas in any specific bill.

With better message control, the Dems can say we have no ideas, but they can be called on it.  Then the ideas can be debated.  Letting them get away with the false argument of no ideas is not acceptable.

Pres. Claims Minor Differences on Stimulus Package – Negates own Argument

Posted by madjillmom on February 23, 2009

At his closing comments on the Fiscal Responsibility Summit, he claims there were only about 15% difference with the Republicans on the stimulus package. Only a little bit of difference he says. The why, prey tell, did he always state the argument in terms of this stimulus package versus no stimulus package?

Plus, after being lectured by a Republican on including ideas from the Republicans to get more bi-partisan support, Obama went back to the false argument of no Republican ideas. The republicans have a lot of ideas and the President knows it. The Pres. is very touchy about this. Very thin skinned.

If the Republicans work with the President on the Fiscal Responsibility Summit, they should make sure to publicize their ideas to the people so the President can’t say once again that they had no ideas. The republicans have to do a better job of getting out their message.

Fiscal Responsibility Summit and Rep. Charlie Rangel

Posted by madjillmom on February 23, 2009

Pres. Obama just came out to let us know how things went at the Financial Responsibility Summit today. He told us all how they brainstormed, how his people took copious notes, and how they will get back to us with real plans on the other “crisis” issues of the day. Those being Social Security, Tax Reform and Healthcare. They will then distribute the notes to the participants. Now the participants are bloviating about what a great meeting they had. Now to add real Financial Responsibility, Rep. Charles Rangel is speaking. This is so riduculous. Why would Pres. Obama call on him with the cloud of tax problems and ethics problems he has now. Why would I trust anything that comes out of a Summit that allow Charlie Rangel to participate?

The market is down 250 points today. Several times they have all broken out in laughter. I wonder what is so funny.

Pres. Obama’s Cabinet Vacancies

Posted by madjillmom on February 23, 2009

I heard over the weekend that Pres. Obama plans to give a speech about healthcare this week. Is he implementing a plan without the help of a Health and Human Services Secretary? Who will put such a plan together? Reid and Pelosi? Where is the announcement regarding who is the 2nd best HHS Secretary?

Where is the 3rd best choice for Commerce?

As an aside, I don’t think there has been another adminsitration with so many Czars, advisors, and advisory committees. Does the right hand know what the left hand is doing?

Is Pres. Obama Ignoring the Market?

Posted by madjillmom on February 23, 2009

Other than the administrations’ minor comment regarding the nationalization of banks, Pres. Obama seems to be ignoring the market at this point in time. Almost daily, he comes out and tells us how transparent the Stimulus package will and should be, how we should live within our means, and how he will hold mayors and governors to account if they waste their stimulus money. But there has been no direct acknowledgement of the markets fall since the stimulus bill was signed. Something tells me if the market was falling like this under a republican, the country would be accusing the President of “fiddling while Rome burned”. Even Bill Clinton said something about how he should appear to be more optimistic. Does Pres. Obama doubt his ability to talk the market up? Or does he want things to get worse? If that is the case, what does he have planned? Pay as you Go doesn’t really reassure the market at this point. Neither does increasing taxes the rich and the corporations.

Shouldn’t the greatest orator of our times address the market’s fall to make us all feel better?

Vows of Secrecy on Defence Officials

Posted by madjillmom on February 22, 2009

Defense News is reporting:

The Obama administration has directed defense officials to sign a pledge stating they will not share 2010 budget data with individuals outside the federal government.

Why is this?  Has it been done before?  Doesn’t Obama want us to know where our defense dollars are going to go in the future?  Can’t the debate about defense dollars be help in public?  I wonder if he doesn’t want us to know how little he listens to those who know the needs of the armed forces? In other words, the Army requests dollars, forces, equipment and Obama’s budget for 2010 includes none of those requests. The Defense department officials can’t call the reporters and tell their side of the story. Nor complain about the process. Does this only apply to those in the military, or does it include civilians working in the Defense Dept.? Does the Agriculture Department, Commerce Dept, etc. have the same requirement to take a vow of secrecy?

Thank goodness the New York Times has access to all secrets of the Defense Department and never has a problem printing them on the front page.

Once again, the President that promised the most transparency doesn’t deliver. Will the MSM care about this?

Protecting the Vulnerable with Bars and Bubbles, but no Info

Posted by madjillmom on February 22, 2009

Pres. Obama has asked us to go to Recovery.gov to see how the stimulus package is being spent.  I went to look at it and it is way less than informational.  The bar graph is misleading as bar graphs often are.  I quick glance would lead the uninformed to believe the bill was really heavy in tax cuts.  That is not the case.  The bars are marked ambiguously like Infrastructure and Science in the same bar.  Then there is is my favorite, “Protecting the Vulnerable“, and my runner-up favorite, “other“.  If you want to find out how your tax $$ will protect the vulnerable, you would naturally click on that bar or click on the “learn more” link.  You might hope for a greater explanation, perhaps a nice bullet list of projects and places translated from the actual bill, but put in normal language so simple people such a myself can see and be amazed. No such luck. Click on a bar and you are transported to the pretty pastel bubble chart.  Each lovely bubble is marked with a big number and the same titles as the bar graph. Click on a bubble, but don’t expect any further information or explanation.  Below the bubble graphic is an invitation to see the same information in a table chart.  Still no further information.  So much for transparency.

Still wanting information, I went to the “Read the Bill” link.  This took me to a place to give comments and I clicked on the url for the bill which takes me to another screen to click on another URL and voila… the bill finally appears.  Then my eyes glaze over.  I did a search but couldn’t isolate anything (searched Texas).  Can’t print it, too much tree waste.

For a last attempt, I went to FAQs.  It tell me that there is no information until it is all broken down and set out.  Lots of info coming soon to recovery.gov.  Now I will sleep better.  Perhaps I will dream of popping pretty pastel bubbles.

Attorney General Holder Inspires Me to Talk of Race

Posted by madjillmom on February 19, 2009

OK, I think I will.  Here is some of what I think:

1.  The monkey cartoon was tasteless and it caused me to wince.  I don’t think I fully understand the sensitivity of the “monkey” thing.  Could someone explain it to me?   If the joke was funny, and it wasn’t, it was calling Reid, Pelosi, Obey, etc. chimps/monkeys.  Everyone knows they wrote the stimulus bill.  I think it might have been better if Pres. Obama wrote it.

2.  In my early life,  the monster was the bigoted Southern white male beating/killing  young black men and those who helped the cause of civil rights.  Today the monster is the young black male, a dropout who listens to gangsta wrap and treats the women around him like trash.  The monster of my youth was a threat to the black community and their ability to move forward.  Today’s monster is a threat to all of us.  But once again, he prays mostly on the black community and their ability to move forward.

3.  I saw today that young black men are now using the word “president” in place of the “n-word”  to refer to each other.  This seems utterly ridiculous but strangely better.

4.  Eric Holder says we have a integrated workplace, but we still self segregate. Each generations goes further down the the road, is more comfortable with people different from themselves.  We do all mostly self segregate, all races.  It gets better, I think.  My grandparents used the word “niggra” as a matter of fact, and my children hear the word “nigger” all the time in the music they listen to.  Can we get any credit for the progress we make or do we need Eric Holder to lecture us?

OK, I have crawled out on the limb.  Join in this conversation.  Don’t saw the limb off.

Kansas IOU Tax Refund Gov. for HHS Secretary

Posted by madjillmom on February 19, 2009

There is a bit in The Corner regarding Gov. Sebelius as a possible HHS Secretary in part because she runs a Medicaid program as the Governor.  That is thin.  I also remember when people laughed at Gov. Palin’s resume noting she was in charge of the Alaska National Guard.  All Governors run their state National Guards.  All states have medicaid programs run by the cheif executive of the state.  I do know she was an early supporter of Pres. Obama.  That definitely counts in this administration (Richardson, Daschle … ) However, her state is not paying state income tax refunds.  As of today, only two states are sending out IOUs for refunds, Kansas and California.  Doesn’t this matter to someone in the Obama administration?  Will Arnold be put in charge of something soon?

Gov. Janet Napolitano is head of homeland security.  What were  her qualification for that?  When was the last time  an earthquake, tornado or hurricane hit Arizona.  According to recent reports, there is a rash of kidnappings in Phoenix that she evidently didn’t control.  Where was she on the influx of illegal aliens in her state, the criminals doing all the kidnapping in the drug trade?  I did hear yesterday that she is conducting a head to toe review of the Homeland Security Dept.  That’s just great. Remember how Pres. Bush was treated for appointing “Brownie” at FEMA. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

Biggest Reduction in Excess Since the Great Depression

Posted by madjillmom on February 18, 2009

I just read Victor David Hanson’s post entitled “Depresssion, Recession, Downturn – Whatever”. If you have a few minutes, read it.  It is very good.  Definitely unsettling.  Most of us are making adjustments to our lifestyles, cutting some here and there.  My husband has a job.  He just survived a large layoff that took out 5 of the 7 in his group.  That is scary.  My sister’s husband is looking at being laid off every third week or so.  At that rate, it will take a long time to deplete his unemployment benefits.  But still, this is even scarier.

http://pajamasmedia.com/victordavishanson/depressions-recession-downturn%e2%80%94whatever/

Pres. Obama likes to tell us we are in the worst economy since the Great Depression.  I think not.  Not even statistically.  He is now telling us his plan for foreclosure relief.  Somehow, I am pretty sure I am going to feel like a chump after he finishes.  I played by the rules, we pay our bills.

6 million in danger of foreclosure – that isn’t that many.  What are the stats on who is in foreclosure?  Is it minorities, speculators, the investment bankers?  Much of this just has to work itself out.  Many places with high foreclosure rates were at the top of the bubble.  If you can make your payment and are underwater, you won’t be able to move in the forseeable future.  You will have to stay there until the market goes up enough for you to get out without writing a check.  This is what happened in Houston in the big oil bust.  It will work itself out.  Today, housing starts came in low.  Isn’t that good for taking down the inventory of houses for sale?

Pres. Obama is at a High School in Phoenix and there is loud cheering from the crowd.  It is like all of his campaign appearances.  Is the audience all in foreclosure?  Probably.
